Mouse Trapline Tally: 8
(Total to-date for this year!)
Notice the trapline number? Yep, caught another! But it either got away or Nova picked it off the sticky trap and ate it....I don't really want to think about that....eeewwww 😝
So I managed to keep the tire on the trailer aired up and haul it into town again last Friday. Kevin had a meeting in Anchorage that morning then headed to Talkeetna. I met one of our neighbors at the trailhead and we struck up a conversation until Kevin got there. His name is Weston. Nice guy!
When Kevin looked at the tire he said "did you realize that the rim is bent all to hell??" Well, I knew it was bent, but didn't know if it had always been that way? Anyhow, we got a hammer and he wacked it back into place, aired up the tire with an air bubble we had in storage, ran a few errands, then back onto the trail to head home. The problem was that once he got the tire ready to roll, we realized that both of the tires were "wonky" and aimed outward. Not cool! He decided to have me drive it across the trestle so that he could walk behind and see what it was doing...
By the time I got it across, it was already starting to lose air. He decided to hammer down and get us home as quickly as possible! Well, THAT was quite the ride, let me tell ya! The man has no fear! At least it wasn't raining... Woo hoo!
We got home covered in mud and not minding it at all. We were lucky to get the trailer home and not break down along the trail somewhere. Later, he flipped it over and determined that the entire axle will have to be taken apart and re-welded. Not sure if we may have hit it against the railroad trestle and bent it? Bernie offered to let us borrow his if we need to make any runs back and forth to town before the snow flies.
It's been a peaceful few days, taking it easy, organizing when we have the energy. I really want Kevin to just relax while he can. We managed to get him a closet put together upstairs. He's happy to have all of his stuff in one place for a change!
He talked to his boss yesterday. It looks like he's going to have to go on the road one more time before they shut down for the season. He'll take the four-wheeler tomorrow, fly out of Anchorage both Thursday and Friday, then should be able to come home Saturday morning. I had to promise not to do anything potentially dangerous while he's gone so no potential emergencies, especially with no wheels. (Well, I was very willing to agree because the trail is really starting to make me nervous and we've had traces of snow the past two days....)
Winter's coming.....
