Mouse Trapline Tally: 7
(Total to-date for this year!)
Kevin is home! For a few days, anyhow....
He called last Wednesday when he made it into Anchorage. The plan was for him to work at the shop on Thursday, then maybe fly out to several of the remote locations he worked in last season to clean out some punch lists for the client. As it turned out, he didn't have to work at the shop. So I took the trail into Talkeetna Thursday morning and drove into Anchorage to pick him up. It had been seven weeks to-the-day since I'd seen him and he was a sight for sore eyes!
We made a few stops on the way back and he drove the trail to get us home that night. It was raining, of course. You should have seen his face when we pulled in.....he's been homesick for a home that he barely got to enjoy before he had to go out on the road again. I think we are both still in disbelief that we actually own such a beautiful place and are anxious to put our mark on it. We are so grateful and thankful to God for making this happen!
So Friday was mainly spent resting and putsing around the place. We've had so much rain this summer that our little live stream of fresh water that runs below the house had been channeling water down the hill, running down the trail to the tracks, then puddling at the bottom of the trail by the tracks. Kevin decided to divert the water to the other side of the trail so that it could run off into the woods...
Later, we decided to walk down there and see if his plan worked. Success! While down at the tracks, we decided to walk north to find the alternate water source we've heard so much about since we moved up here. Found it a little ways up the tracks...
It may not look like much, but when you depend on your water to come from the ground, multiple sources are so important! On the way, we passed a building that looks as though it may have been a little generator shed for the railroad...
I'm always looking for old railroad spikes and other metal thrown off by the railroad. Kevin plans to build a forge, eventually, and assures me the metal treasures I retrieve can be put to good use one day!
You can see how close we are to the Susitna River. I was standing on the tracks to take this picture. We can sometimes hear it running from our cabin. I'm told it freezes over in the winter and becomes a super highway for snow machines. I think I'll take my chances on the trail....something about breaking through the ice just really doesn't appeal to me....😏
So Kevin gets to stay home until Tuesday. One of my main requests that he get done before he has to go back out was to cut the foam board I bought for the hole in the outhouse. No sense in freezing your tail off when you're out there. He just came in from outside and told me it's done. Mission accomplished!
I will miss him terribly when he leaves again but I know it's only for a few days this time. Then he'll be home for the winter. The forecast is calling for snow showers as early as next Sunday, so we'll see what happens. In the meantime, most of the trees have dropped their leaves. But this bush by the house is changing colors daily...
Stay tuned...
