Family Surprise!

Here comes the train!

Mouse trap line: 17

Snowfall: 103” (8.58’)

Hello again!

So the last time we “chatted” I mentioned that Kevin’s dad, Everett, was coming to visit….What Kevin didn’t know was that his mom, Susan, was coming too! She enlisted my help to keep it a secret and I’ll admit, it got harder to do as the day got closer….

Dad getting off train

Kevin was so excited to see his dad get off the train… Then was a little confused by the sparkly, red suitcase?? Not typically Everett’s style, but okay, to each their own he guessed…

Mom off the train

Then down steps Susan! He was flabbergasted! I should have gotten a picture of his face but was more worried about getting everyone onto the snow machines and up the hill out of the cold…

They were able to stay five days and there was a lot of visiting, crafting, food, card games and laughter to be had…

Folks in the house

Susan asked me to show her how to make sourdough bread while she was here so that was fun!

Sourdough bread-yum!

I have a robust starter from an old woman in town that’s been going since 1906 (the starter, not the woman … haha). Works like a charm!

Folks in the cabin

The day after they got here, Alex & Michelle had a new refrigerator delivered via the railroad.  They left it at our whistlestop so the adventure began to get it over to their cabin up the trail…

It’s the little things….

Alex and Kevin got it loaded onto the sled and up the hill, then Everett jumped on with Kevin to get it over to their cabin…

It was pretty cold the entire time the folks were here so it was tough to want to do anything outside.  But the last day they were here it finally warmed up to about 20 degrees so Kevin was able to get his mom onto the snow machine for a short ride around the property.

So glad they got to do it! And here she is getting ready to peek into my sewing cabin. She said the ride was one of her favorite parts of the trip!

To try to keep them as warm as possible while we waited for the train to pick them up, we popped up an ice fishing tent that we borrowed from the neighbors.

Insert a couple of chairs and a propane heater and WA-LAH! Everyone was toasty!

Toasty in the tent!

We truly enjoyed their visit and appreciate them taking the time and making the effort to come. It’s not an easy trip from the Midwest to get here, especially when your destination is so off the beaten path!

Well, I guess that’s about all for now. Aside from visiting with family, we spend most of our days right now tucked in the cabin or chopping down trees to stay warm. Summer will be here before you know it. Maybe we’ll start some vegetable seeds in the next few days..

In the meantime, stay wild!
